Periodontal health and esthetic results in impacted teeth exposed by apically positioned flap technique.

2010

Objectives: This study evaluates the periodontal health status and the esthetic results of teeth subjected to orthodontic traction, after their exposure by an apically positioned flap. Study design: Fifteen patients were included in the study, ages between 11 and 28 years old. The fenestrated teeth and their homologous contralateral normally erupted teeth, used as control, were evaluated. Results: Statistically significant differences were found in the position of the gingival margin (p = 0.005), with an average distance between cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) and gingival margin of 2.47 mm (SD 1.19) in control teeth and of 1 mm (SD 1.31) in the operated teeth, and in the depth of palatal pro…

Efect of periodontal disease and non surgical periodontal treatment on C-reactive protein. Evaluation of type 1 diabetic patients

2011

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze how anti-infectious periodontal treatment affects C reactive protein (CRP) values in patients with type 1 diabetes, and correlate baseline CRP levels with periodontal disease severity. Study Design: A cohort of fifty three subjects with type 1 diabetes and moderate to severe periodontitis were recruited. Periodontal parameters were measured, and blood samples were obtained to evaluate high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). Group 1 was treated with scaling, root planning, and systemic administration of doxycycline. Group 2 received only scaling and root planning. Results: Hs-CRP was reduced after periodontal treatment in group 1 (-0…

The Effectiveness of Laser-Assisted Surgical Excision of Leukoplakias and Hyperkeratosis of Oral Mucosa: A Case Series in A Group of Patients

2019

Introduction: In the different branches of dentistry, the use of laser to solve different clinical situations is increasing due to numerous advantages that have been studied in literature since the 70s. Leucoplakia and hyperkeratosis can benefit from laser-assisted treatment. In most cases biopsy sampling, histological examination and, if no malignant cells are present, the follow-up is needed. However, even if the lesion is free of dysplasia patients often ask to eliminate these white spots that are always a cause of concern. Aim: From these numerous requests comes the idea of setting up a laser-assisted protocol as less invasive as possible to be offered to patients. The aim of the study …

A comparative study of silver amalgam and compomer as retrograde filling materials in periapical surgery

2008

Objective: A comparative study is made of the histological effects of silver amalgam versus compomer (Dyract®) 90 days after placement as retrograde filling materials in experimental animals. Method: Six Beagle dogs were used, with total pulpectomy and orthograde material filling followed by periapical surgery of the 6 upper and 6 lower incisors (for a total of 72 teeth). Thirty-six teeth corresponded to the right side and were filled with the control material (silver amalgam), while the 36 teeth on the left side were filled with the compomer study material (Dyract®). After three months the animals were sacrificed and the histological study was carried out, with evaluation of bone formation…

Day case oral surgery in pediatric patients during the year 2000 in the University of Barcelona Dental Clinic (Spain)

2005

Influence of root width and dentin wall thickness evaluated by endoscopy upon the outcome of periapical surgery. A cohort study.

2020

Background: An analysis was made of the correlation between root width, the thickness of the remaining dentinal wall as determined by endoscopy, and the outcome of periapical surgery. Material and Methods: A retrospective cohort study was carried out involving patients subjected to periapical surgery between 2017 and 2019 at the University of Valencia (Valencia, Spain). One year after surgery, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was used to evaluate healing against the preoperative volumes. The maximum root width was measured on the postoperative CBCT scan at the apical section of the treated root. This measurement was transferred to the intraoperative endoscopic image, where the minimum r…

Accuracy and the role of experience in dynamic computer guided dental implant surgery: an in-vitro study

2019

Background To compare the accuracy of implant placement using the conventional freehand method and a dynamic navigation system; to assess the role of the surgeon’s experience in implant placement using these two methods. Material and Methods A randomized in-vitrostudy was conducted. Six resin mandible models and 36 implants were used. Two researchers with differing clinical experience (novice and experienced) placed implants using either the Navident dynamic navigation system (navigation group) or the conventional freehand method (freehand group). Accuracy was measured by overlaying the real position in the postoperative CBCT on the virtual presurgical placement of the implant in a CBCT ima…

Fracture resistance after implantoplasty in three implant-abutment connection designs

2020

Background To assess the effect of implantoplasty and implant-abutment design on the fracture resistance and macroscopic morphology of narrow-diameter (3.5 mm) dental implants. Material and Methods Screw-shaped titanium dental implants (n = 48) were studied in vitro. Three groups (n = 16) were established, based on implant-abutment connection type: external hexagon, internal hexagon and conical. Eight implants from each group were subjected to an implantoplasty procedure; the remaining 8 implants served as controls. Implant wall thickness was recorded. All samples were subjected to a static strength test. Results The mean wall thickness reductions varied between 106.46 and 153.75 µm. The me…

Update on the management of anticoagulated and antiaggregated patients in dental practice: Literature review

2021

Background: Oral antiplatelet and anticoagulant drugs are widely used in a large number of patients visiting the dentist, and there has been much controversy over the years towards their clinical management. The aim to carry out a literature review in order to develop an update on dental management in anticoagulated and / or anti aggregated patients, focusing on oral surgery. Material and methods: A bibliographic search was carried out in PubMed on studies published between January 1, 2018, until December 10, 2020, using the keywords ('antiplatelet' OR 'antiplatelets') AND ('dentistry'), and ('anticoagulant' OR 'anticoagulants') AND ('dentistry'). Results: The number of studies included in …

Evaluation of healing criteria for success after periapical surgery

2014

Introduction: In periapical surgery, the absence of standardization between different studies makes it difficult to compare the outcomes. Objective: To compare the healing classification of different authors and evaluate the prognostic criteria of periapical surgery at 12 months. Material and methods: 278 patients (101 men and 177 women) with a mean age of 38.1 years (range 11 to 77) treated with periapical surgery using the ultrasound technique and a 2.6x magnifying glass, and silver amalgam as root-end filling material were included in the study. Evolution was analyzed using the clinical criteria of Mikkonen et al., 1983; radiographic criteria of Rud et al., 1972; the overall combined cli…
